Mobile learning in the UK National Health Service

Norman (2011) reports on research conducted for the UK National Health Service which sought to explore the utility of mobile learning for those workers, such as district nurses and midwives, who work remotely in the community and away from hospitals or surgeries, making conventional e-learning difficult. Aside from benefiting from many of the advantages of e-learning more broadly – the flexibility and convenience of anytime access to learning – mobile learning was also found to result in better professional judgments, to encourage reflection, to enhance content retention (as a result of accessing bite-sized ‘nuggets’ of directly relevant information), to lead to improved learner confidence and to enhance relevance of learning where it is accessed close to the site of practice. Using already familiar devices such as tablets or smartphones was found to reduce the technological barriers associated with deploying new technologies. However, as with all new methods of learning, particularly those associated with ‘always on’ technology, resistance to mobile learning was found, stressing the importance of communicating the added value of this channel of learning to ensure buy-in.
